Introduction

To enhance the understanding of Meteorology, Professional skill and competency of trainees to enable them to efficiently and effectively contribute in mitigation of climate related disasters and sustainable national development.

As a Meteorological Institute, our vision is to be a global leader in imparting professional training and advancing meteorological science, research, and innovation to enhance society’s understanding and preparedness for weather and climate related phenomena.

Pakistan Meteorological Department offers professional training courses in various branches of Meteorology, Geophysics & allied sciences at the Institute of Meteorology & Geophysics (IMG) Karachi. The Institute established in 1958, provides training to the serving personnel of Pakistan Meteorological Department, Pakistan Air Force, Pakistan Navy and other departments. Trainees from Meteorological Services of other countries are also welcome.

TRAINING COURSES AND PROGRAM

Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) offers professional training courses in various branches of Meteorology, Geophysics and allied sciences at the Institute of Meteorology and Geophysics (IMG) Karachi. The Institute provides training to the serving personnel of Pakistan Meteorological Department, Pakistan Air Force, Pakistan Navy and other departments. Trainees from Meteorological Services of other countries are also welcome. The courses are of various levels and are designed to cope the need of new-comers in the field of Meteorology as well as for those who have acquired sufficient experience in the field and require higher training.

The syllabi of courses provided at the Institute have been prepared mainly according to the pattern recommended by World Meteorological Organization (WMO). In terms of the new classification system, there are two categories of meteorological personnel (i) Graduate professionals, Meteorologist and (ii) Meteorological Technicians; within each of which there are three career development levels (Entry level, Mid-level and Senior level). The training programme for the two types of personnel are Basic Instructional Package for Meteorologist (BIP-M) and Basic Instructional Package for Meteorological Technicians (BIP-MT).

The aim of the courses is to provide both theoretical and practical background to the students and to equip them fully for the job after completion of the training. Adequate emphasis is laid on practical and professional aspects of the subject at the Institute and is supplemented by on- the-job training at one of the Meteorological Forecasting Office. Medium of instruction at the institute is English. Candidates from abroad desiring enrollment are to be sponsored by their respective Government. Candidates from other departments are to be nominated by appropriate authorities.

Meteorological training courses offered at the Institute are of two types (Regular and Special), Regular courses are run on routine basis while special courses, which are generally of shorter duration, are conducted as and when required. The training of fresh personnel is started from initial stage and is gradually taken up to higher levels as required.
